South Korea has made another big move in the field of electronic devices! South Korea has officially legislated to require consumer electronic devices to fully adopt the USB Type-C interface. Let's take a detailed look below.

New regulations are coming, with clear goals

On November 5, 2025, the South Korean Ministry of Science and Information Technology (MSIT) issued Notice No. 2025-56, mandating that new mobile and smart devices in the South Korean market use USB Type-C interface for charging and data transmission. This marks South Korea's entry into the global wave of interface unification, reducing waste, lowering consumer burden, and promoting digital ecological interconnection.

The new regulations aim to reduce electronic waste and improve device compatibility, and will be enforced from November 2026. Finally, on this day, the battle for charging cables is coming to an end!

Core content and scope of application

According to the Technical Standards for Charging and Data Transmission Methods of Broadcasting and Communication Equipment such as Mobile Terminals and Smart Devices, starting from November 5, 2026 (one year after the notification is issued), wireless broadcasting and communication equipment newly applying for KC certification in the thirteen major categories must be equipped with USB Type-C sockets that meet the standard specifications.

These devices include mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones, earphones, portable video game consoles, portable speakers, e-book readers, keyboards, mice, portable navigation devices, earbuds, laptops, basically covering the mainstream consumer electronics field that relies on wired charging or data exchange devices. However, devices that have obtained KC certification before the implementation of this regulation do not need to be re certified, and their market access qualifications are not affected.

Clear technical specifications and compliance path

Detailed specifications for the mechanical dimensions of USB Type-C, such as opening width and height tolerances, and tongue length.

Compliance Path:

Selection: Provide KC SDoC (Supplier Declaration of Conformity).

Alternative: Laboratory size report or IEC/EN62680-1-3 test report.

Policy implementation and dynamic adjustment

⏰  Effective date: Released on November 5, 2025, officially implemented on November 5, 2026.

📋  Transitional arrangement: The regulation provides a one-year transition period for the industry chain, allowing manufacturers time to complete product design adjustments, testing, and certification work.

🔄  Continuous optimization: MSIT will establish a regular review mechanism, based on January 1, 2025, to comprehensively evaluate the applicability of technical standards every three years, ensuring that they keep up with the pace of technological progress and market development, and are revised and improved in a timely manner.

This mandatory regulation is good news for consumers, as it can greatly simplify the charging experience, reduce the dependence of different devices on dedicated cables, and cut electronic waste from the source. For manufacturers, planning ahead and ensuring that products comply with new regulations is key to maintaining and expanding the Korean market.
