Dear customer partners, take a look! On September 15, 2025, the 24th edition of the "Recommended Regulations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods" was revised and released, with significant updates to the transportation rules for lithium batteries. The editor will help you highlight the key points and see the core changes at a glance!

1. Transportation code adjustment

This revision has provided more detailed classification and description updates for some battery types, and added two new codes. Please pay special attention to:

UN 3536

The original description "Lithium ion battery pack installed in the freight unit" has been modified to "Lithium ion battery pack installed in the freight unit";

UN 3552

Expand from one to two clear classifications:

UN 3552 Organic electrolyte sodium ion battery pack included in equipment;

UN 3552 organic electrolyte sodium ion battery pack packaged together with equipment;

New UN 3563: Lithium metal battery packs installed in freight units;

New UN 3564: Sodium ion battery packs installed in freight units.

Interpretation: The coding system is further refined to distinguish between lithium-ion and lithium metal batteries, and sodium ion batteries are classified separately, reminding enterprises to accurately distinguish battery types and use corresponding codes when declaring transportation.

2. Clearly define the transportation requirements for hybrid batteries

Add clause 2.9.4 (h) to specify the transportation conditions for lithium-ion and sodium ion hybrid batteries:

1. There must be a circuit connection between the lithium-ion and sodium ion batteries in the battery pack;

2. The battery pack must have passed the test required by clause 2.9.4 (a) as a lithium-ion battery pack;

3. Each lithium-ion and sodium ion battery cell within the group must have passed the testing requirements of UN 38.3.

Interpretation: The new regulations fill the policy gap in the transportation of hybrid batteries, emphasizing that in addition to meeting lithium battery testing requirements, each battery cell must also comply with UN 38.3 certification, which puts higher demands on battery design and testing.

3. Mark changes

The "lithium battery pack label" in the transportation label should be uniformly changed to a broader "battery pack label".

Interpretation: The change in label names reflects a more diverse range of battery types covered by regulations, and companies need to update transportation labels and documents in a timely manner.
