Approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), UL 62368-1:2025 "Audio, Video, Information and Communication Technology Equipment Part 1: Safety Requirements" (Fourth Edition) was officially released and adopted as the American National Standard on July 31, 2025.

This standard is an updated version of the international standard IEC 62368-1:2023 (4th edition) and the EU standard EN IEC 62368-1:2024 (4th edition), marking a comprehensive upgrade of the security specification system for audio, video, and information communication technology equipment (AV/ICT) in the United States.

1. Standard upgrade

UL 62368-1:2025 is based on the fourth edition of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 62368-1:2023, with its core logic shifting from "product classification regulation" to "energy source risk classification control". The standard divides energy sources into three levels:

ES1 level: safe contact range (such as output voltage ≤ 60V DC, current ≤ 8A), user can directly contact;

ES2 level: perceptible but not lethal (such as 75V DC voltage), requiring additional protective measures;

ES3 level: High risk energy sources (exceeding ES2 limits) must be prevented from contact through double isolation or physical blockade.

2 Main technical updates

1. Component certification requirements

We no longer accept components/parts certified according to traditional standards IEC 60950-1 (IT equipment) or IEC 60065 (audio and video equipment). Manufacturers of components/parts that rely on traditional standard certification need to urgently review the BOM list, and it is expected that there will still be many components/parts that need to be re certified or replaced by each manufacturer;

2. Button Battery Safety Specification

Updated the structural requirements for button batteries and added UL 4200A (including safety standards for button battery products) requirements;

3. Power output parameters

Updated the relevant tables for external circuit requirements, revised the definition of external circuit classification to correspond to standard IEC TR 62102, and also made revisions and corrections to the overvoltage values of different categories of external circuits;

4. Mechanical structure requirements

Updated the requirements for fireproof shell openings, mainly correcting the size requirements for side openings;

5. Wireless foreign object charging test

The requirements for wireless charging foreign object testing have been updated, clarifying that the center position of the wireless charging and charged product coils should be aligned or assisted in aligning before testing, and adding two testing states: Part A (power on first and then discharge foreign object) and Part B (power on first and then discharge foreign object);

6. Resistance safety protection

For the safety protection fuse resistor in the product, it has been added that the fuse resistor must comply with the requirements of IEC 60127-8;

7. Requirements for liquid cooled components

Updated the requirements for liquid cooling components, and developed new requirements for leak detection, fluid compatibility, pressure release, etc. for modular liquid cooling systems (LFC) with a capacity exceeding 1 liter. Suitable for advanced cooling scenarios such as AI servers and high-performance computing devices;

8. Battery system requirements

A large number of requirements for rechargeable lithium batteries have been updated. New mandatory requirements have been added for fixed lithium battery systems, covering non portable equipment such as backup power sources and large energy storage devices in data centers. For batteries with segmented parameters, clearly add segmented testing, etc;

9. Requirements for Mesh/Grid Structure Equipment

For equipment with mesh/grid structure, equipment using breathable materials, and equipment covered with foam/fabric, fire spread test caused by external heat source shall be added.

3 Scope of Impact

UL 62368-1:2025 applies to all electronic devices connected to the power grid or powered by batteries, including but not limited to:

Computers and peripherals: laptops, servers, routers, UPS power supplies;

Consumer electronics: Bluetooth earphones, smart speakers, digital cameras, drones;

Display devices: LCD TV, LED display screen, projector;

Communication equipment: 5G base station, fiber optic terminal, vehicle communication module;

Industrial equipment: medical monitors, industrial robot control units, AI servers.

Data Warning: According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), 83% of Chinese products recalled in 2024 due to electrical safety issues are directly related to certification loss or failure, with an average loss of $2.2 million per company.
