On March 14, 2025, the Australia New Zealand Lighting EL-041 Joint Technical Committee officially released the standard AS/NZS 60598.1:2025, which will replace the current AS/NZS 60598.1:2017+A1:2017+A2:2020, with a transition period of 36 months.

 This version of the standard is revised based on IEC 60598-1:2020 and includes the following Australia New Zealand technical deviations:

(1) In addition to Class III lamps, the rated voltage and test voltage need to include 240V (single-phase) and 415V (three-phase);

(2) The filtering or voltage divider capacitors permanently connected to the mains power require X-rated capacitors with parameters of at least 250V&100 ℃ or 280V&85 ℃;

(3) Inductive switches or similar control circuits must meet the requirements of Chapter 4.8 for electronic switches;

(4) Definition of portable lighting fixtures powered by batteries;

(5) The input power must be tested, and the test result cannot exceed 1.1 times the rated power;

(6) For household or similar lighting fixtures without a plug on the power cord, it is necessary to add a plug to the power cord

The "must be installed by a licensed electrician" logo (see figure below)

(The label can also be placed in a prominent position on the packaging, with a minimum size of 50mmx30mm);

(7) For lamps or their accessories that use button/R1 batteries, the instruction manual should include relevant warning statements;

(8) Switches with a current carrying capacity greater than 20mA and marked with a disconnect position must meet the requirements of AS/NZS 3133, AS/NZS 60669 series, or AS/NZS 61058.1;

(9) Electronic switches must comply with AS 60669.2.1, AS/NZS 61058.1.2, or IEC 61058-1-2 and have a rated operating life of ≥ 10000 cycles;

(10) The overvoltage protection device must comply with IEC 61643-11, and the overvoltage protection components must comply with the provisions of AS/NZS 3100 for varistors;

(11) If button/R1 batteries are used in the lamp or its accessories, the cover must meet the testing requirements of the newly added 4.37 chapter; After disassembling the cover fixed with screws, the screws need to be attached to the cover, and the adhesion is evaluated through testing;

(12) Portable lamps powered by batteries must meet any standard requirement:

① Sections 12, 19.17 and Appendix B of AS/NZS 60335.1:2022, or

② Appendix M of AS/NZS 62368.1:2022;

(13) The minimum wire diameter of the power cord meets the following basic requirements:

① 0.75mm2, or

② 1.0mm2 (only for portable lighting fixtures used in harsh environments)

(14) The installation of couplers for lighting fixtures must comply with IEC 61995-1;

(15) Portable lighting fixtures with power cords must include plugs that comply with AS/NZS 3112;

(16) In addition to the IEC listed replacement of light sources/starters when turning on lighting fixtures, it is also required that no live parts be touched during cleaning/maintenance. Before conducting an electric shock assessment, the cover that can be removed by hand must be removed first. For lighting fixtures with non user replacement light sources below IP5X level, the cover on the light source must be removed before evaluating the protection against electric shock (even if there are screws and anti electric shock symbols), which is not considered to have a protective effect;

(17) IPX7/8 cannot cover IPX5/6 and must be separately labeled and tested;

(18) 750 ℃ heating wire is used for non-metallic materials with fixed carrier fluid, and 650 ℃ heating wire is used for other non-metallic materials. In the hot wire test, if a fire occurs for more than 2 seconds, a needle flame test shall be conducted for 30 seconds on non-metallic materials within a vertical cylindrical range with a diameter of 20mm and a height of 50mm around the component.

Note: The differences highlighted in bold are significant technical changes compared to the previous version of AS/NZS 60598.1:2017+A1:2017+A2:2020, and manufacturers should focus on considering them when upgrading existing product designs.
