On January 12, 2022, the Official Journal of the European Union published the authorization regulation 2022/30/EU, requiring compliance with the requirements of Article 3.3 (d), (e), and (f) of RED. This regulation requires network security, personal data privacy, and fraud protection for wireless devices applicable in the EU market, aiming to ensure that such devices have a higher level of network security and enhance consumer confidence in them. And it will be enforced on August 1, 2025, providing a 42 month transition period for equipment manufacturers.

The EU released the NEN-EN 18031 standard applicable to RED network security requirements in 2024.

Range

Authorized Regulation 2022/30/EU covers equipment that can communicate (indirectly) via the Internet, directly or through other equipment, and radio equipment that may expose sensitive personal data. For example:

Mobile phones, tablets, and laptops;

Wireless toys and child safety devices, such as baby monitors;

Wearable devices such as smartwatches and fitness trackers.

The specific regulatory provisions correspond to the following product scope:

Article 3.3 (d): Devices related to network protection;

Article 3.3 (e): Devices for processing personal data, traffic data, or location data;

Article 3.3 (f): Radio equipment that enables holders or users to transfer money, monetary value, or virtual currency as defined in Article 2 (d) of EU Directive 2019/713.
