Lighting fixtures Part 1: General requirements and tests IEC 60598-1 is about to receive a version update:

According to the latest progress of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standard IEC 60598-1:2024, this standard will be officially released on October 8, 2024, replacing the current IEC 60598-1:2020.

Our laboratory first studied and found that the 2024 standard has undergone significant changes in structure/chapter numbers compared to the current 2020 version, including the following major technical changes:

(1) Revised the relevant content of surge protection devices (SPD) and surge protection components (SPC) in Article 7.32;

(2) A review has been conducted on the use of the terms live parts and accessible parts, and the descriptions of "live parts" and "hazardous live parts" are consistent with international electrotechnical terminology;

(3) Revised the mechanical stress of the conductor in clause 7.14.2;

(4) Revised item 4 of Article 14.5.1, including control devices;

(5) The term "permanent" in clause 9.2.1 of the grounding has been deleted;

(6) Revised Appendix N grounding continuity test time;

(7) Revised the requirements for magnetic suspension in Sections 7.11.4, 7.14.1, and Table 22 (Section 14.4.3);

(8) Add new accessory W for battery powered lighting fixtures;

(9) Revised the marking requirements for power supply types in Chapter 7;

(10) Added clause 7.31.5: Additional requirements for lamps using controllable control devices that provide SELV output;

(11) Revised clause 6.4.17: Information to be provided for lamps with a protective grounding current greater than 10 mA;

(12) Modified clauses 6.3.24, 6.4.19, 6.4.25, 7.30, and 10.2.1 to apply to maintainable, non user maintained, and non maintainable control devices;

(13) Revised Attachment D: Windshield;

(14) Revised inconsistency between voltage range limits in clause 8.2.1 and clause 13.2.1;

(15) Revised loop installation in clause 9.2.10;

(16) Revised Chapter 2 and Article 7.8, updated references to IEC 61058, and updated Table 21 (Article 14.4.3) for lamps containing switches based on the IEC 60669 series;

(17) Revised the requirements for photobiosafety in Articles 6.3.23 and 7.24.

The use of magnets (permanent magnets) to suspend lighting fixtures has become increasingly common in lighting products, and many manufacturers have doubts about the safety factor it should have as a mechanical suspension, fixation, and connection. Today, I will bring you an interpretation of the new requirements set by this standard for this structure:

Added relevant requirements for magnetic suspension in clause 7.14.1 of IEC 60598-1:2024. Add a new line at the end of Table 22 in Article 14.4.3, "Permanent magnets for the suspension of lamps/fixtures", with the highest temperature being "the highest continuous operating temperature claimed by the magnet manufacturer", and add the following content at the end of Appendix J: "The design of lamps and fixture components suspension components using permanent magnets should simultaneously consider the characteristics of the magnet and its intended use."

The design of lighting fixtures using permanent magnets for suspension should consider the following:

① Permanent magnets are temperature sensitive and should consider the maximum temperature information allowed by the manufacturer;

② The ambient temperature for lamp design;

③ The external treatment, spraying, and other surface treatments of permanent magnets can change their characteristics, and mechanical (suspension) testing should be carried out in the final version of the component/assembly;

④ When using permanent magnets outdoors, possible changes in their characteristics due to oxidation and corrosion should be considered, as well as information from the magnet manufacturer;

⑤ Permanent magnets are sensitive to mechanical processing, which can lead to degradation of their characteristics. Mechanical testing should be conducted in the final stage of suspension equipment;

⑥ Cracking of the coating can damage the permanent magnet, and appropriate packaging should be ensured during transportation;

⑦ In circuits with power and current not exceeding 15 W and 2 A, it is allowed to use magnets to carry current, as it has no effect on the initial magnetic force. Even if used for a long time, the change in magnetic force is small enough and the volume resistivity is low enough.
