Important Notice! The Australian Clean Energy Commission (CEC) has officially released new energy storage regulations, SA TS 5398, which will be gradually implemented from 2026. This means that the original Battery Best Practice Guide (BPG) is about to exit the historical stage. Understand the new regulations to ensure the smooth entry of your energy storage products into the Australian market!

Implementation timeline: three-step transition arrangement

·From January 1, 2026 to December 31, 2026: Both new and old standards are in parallel, and enterprises can choose one to apply for listing.

·Starting from January 1, 2027, CEC will only accept new applications based on SA TS 5398.

·Starting from December 31, 2027, all products listed under the old label (BPG) will officially become invalid, and only new label products can continue to be used.

Technical specification changes

·New module assembly requirements: Clarify the specific technical requirements for components in modular energy storage devices, including assembly methods, connection safety, etc.

·Expand the scope of technology: Formally include lead-acid battery technology and reserve a framework for the inclusion of other energy storage technologies in the future, such as flow batteries, sodium ion batteries, etc.

·Simplify compliance path: Integrate the original four compliance methods into two, namely "Standard Method" (Method 3 based on BPG) and "Alternative Method 2" (Method 2 based on BPG), and update relevant terminology and testing requirements.

Column name validity period adjustment: unified to 3 years

According to SA TS 5398, the approved listing is valid for 3 years and needs to be updated upon expiration. Existing BPG listed products, if their expiration date exceeds the end of 2027, will be uniformly advanced to December 31, 2027.

Important reminder: Listing is not mandatory, but it concerns subsidies and project access

Australia does not require all energy storage products to be listed under the CEC, but if the product is to enter terminal projects or apply for government subsidies (such as the Home Energy Storage Subsidy Program), it must be listed.

Response suggestion: Prepare early and transition early

It is recommended that relevant enterprises familiarize themselves with the content of SA TS 5398 as soon as possible, evaluate product compliance, arrange testing and application time reasonably, and avoid market access obstacles after 2027.
