On October 13, 2025, the European Union announced that the European Commission has recently revised the Ecological Design Regulation (EU) 2019/1782 for external power sources, mandating that chargers for devices such as laptops, smartphones, wireless routers, and displays must be equipped with at least one USB Type C interface and use detachable cables to enhance their versatility.

The new regulations have also expanded the scope of applicable products, including external power supplies, chargers, wireless charging pads, and USB Type C cables, while setting higher energy efficiency standards. This move aims to reduce electronic waste and energy consumption.

It is expected that by 2035, energy consumption will be saved by about 3% annually, greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced by 9%, and consumer annual spending can be reduced by about 100 million euros. Moreover, all devices within the scope of the new interoperability rules will display the EU universal charger logo, which is a unique visual element that helps inform consumers and promote matching between chargers and powered devices.
