On November 6, 2024, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) officially released the standard IEC 60598-1:2024, which will replace the current IEC 60598-1:2020.

Compared with the current 2020 version, the 2024 version of the standard has undergone significant changes in structure/chapter numbers, including the following major technical changes:

(1) Revised the relevant content of surge protection devices (SPD) and surge protection components (SPC) in Article 7.32;

(2) A review has been conducted on the use of the terms' live parts' and 'accessible parts', and the descriptions of' live parts' and 'hazardous live parts' are consistent with international electrical terminology;

(3) Modified the mechanical stress of the conductor in Article 7.14.2;

(4) Revised Article 14.5.1, Item 4, including control devices;

(5) Deleted the word 'permanent' in clause 9.2.1 on grounding;

(6) Revised Appendix N for grounding continuity test time;

(7) Revised the magnet suspension requirements in Article 7.11.4, Article 7.14.1, and Table 22 (Article 14.4.3);

(8) Add a new accessory W for battery powered lighting fixtures;

(9) Revised the labeling requirements for power supply types in Chapter 7;

(10) Added clause 7.31.5: Additional requirements for lamps using controllable control devices that provide SELV output;

(11) Revised Article 6.4.17: Information to be provided for lighting fixtures with a protective grounding current greater than 10 mA;

(12) Revised Article 6.3.24, 6.4.19, 6.4.25, 7.30, and 10.2.1 to apply to maintainable, non user maintainable, and non maintainable control devices;

(13) Modified Attachment D: Windproof Cover;

(14) Revised the inconsistency between the voltage range limits in Article 8.2.1 and Article 13.2.1;

(15) Revised the loop installation in section 9.2.10;

(16) Revised Chapter 2 and Article 7.8, updated the reference to IEC 61058, and updated Table 21 (Article 14.4.3) for lamps containing switches based on the IEC 60669 series;

(17) Revised the requirements for photobiological safety in Articles 6.3.23 and 7.24.

(18) Add a new clause 6.3.27, which requires that the rated current of the lamp socket should be nominal, if it is less than its rated value.

In the lighting market, more and more lighting fixtures are powered by batteries, but there is no requirement for battery powered lighting fixtures in IEC 60598-1:2020. The new standard will fill this gap by adding requirements for lamps powered by rechargeable or non rechargeable batteries. The following is the interpretation of Article (8):

Add a requirement to Article 4.2.2 of the new standard: "Luminaires and their accessories (such as remote controls) equipped with batteries or EDLCs shall additionally comply with the requirements of Appendix W

Attachment W is not applicable to emergency lighting fixtures. All requirements related to batteries/EDLC for emergency lighting fixtures are given in IEC 60598-2-22.

In Article 4.3.4, a requirement is added that the battery/EDLC of the luminaire shall comply with the following IEC standards: "Batteries composed of lithium-ion batteries do not need to comply with IEC 62133-2, and they shall be tested as part of the luminaire in accordance with this standard; batteries of other technologies other than lithium-ion batteries do not need to comply with IEC 62133-1 or IEC 62133-2, and they shall be tested as part of the luminaire in accordance with this standard; EDLC must comply with IEC 62391-1 and IEC 62391-2

The new version of the standard also adds normative Appendix W, which details the requirements for labeling and structure of battery/EDLC powered lamps.
