The EU Battery Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 has officially come into effect, and the new EU Battery Law provides detailed requirements for battery label information. In fact, there were regulations on battery labeling requirements in the old version of the Battery Directive 2006/66/EC, but they are far less detailed than those stipulated in the new Battery Law. This issue provides an overview of the specific requirements and effective dates for battery labeling under the EU Battery Law.

All batteries

 2024.2.18

Batteries with cadmium content exceeding 0.002% or lead content exceeding 0.004% must be labeled with the chemical symbol Cd or Pb for the relevant metal.

 2025.8.18

All batteries must be marked with a separate recycling symbol (the "crossed wheeled trash can" symbol), and the EU battery regulations also specify the specific size of the separate recycling symbol.

August 18, 2026 or 18 months after the implementation of the law takes effect (whichever is later)

All types of batteries are required to include basic information:

1. Manufacturer's information;

2. Battery category and information about the battery;

3. Production location (geographical location of battery production plant);

4. Production date (month, year);

5. The weight of the battery;

6. Battery capacity;

7. Chemical composition;

8. Harmful substances in batteries other than mercury, cadmium, and lead;

9. Suitable fire extinguishing agents;

10. Key raw materials with a mass exceeding 0.1% present in the battery.

 2027.8.18

All batteries should be labeled with QR codes. The QR code should provide the following access:

For LMT batteries, industrial batteries and electric vehicle batteries with a capacity greater than 2kWh should provide a battery passport;

2. For other batteries, the applicable information specified in paragraphs 1 to 5 of this article, the EU declaration of conformity, due diligence reports, and information on the prevention and management of waste batteries;

3. For SLI batteries, it is necessary to reflect the amount of cobalt, lead, lithium, or nickel recovered from waste in the active materials of the battery.

Rechargeable portable, LMT, and SLI batteries

August 18, 2026 or 18 months after the implementation of the law takes effect (whichever is later)

It should have a label containing its capacity information.

Non rechargeable portable battery

August 18, 2026 or 18 months after the implementation of the law takes effect (whichever is later)

It should be labeled with information on the minimum average duration for use in a specific application, and labeled as "non rechargeable"

Overall, the EU battery regulations have detailed requirements for displaying label information, but implementation is quite challenging due to the characteristics and size limitations of batteries. Therefore, it is recommended to include labels and QR codes in the battery packaging and accompanying documents. Regarding the format and specifications of labels, the European Commission will establish a unified battery regulation label standard through amendments before August 18, 2025.

Based on this, battery manufacturers only need to refer to relevant coordination standards to develop label templates after the amendment is passed, and ensure the accuracy and effectiveness of the provided label information.

Starting from February 18, 2027, all batteries must come with a QR code. After scanning the QR code, users can view the original label information, the EU conformity declaration issued by the battery manufacturer, and the due diligence report. In addition, LMT batteries, industrial batteries with a capacity exceeding 2kWh, and electric vehicle batteries also require a battery passport. Scan the QR code to view the battery passport, which is an electronic document containing detailed information about each battery.
