What is HALT test?
The full name of HALT (High Accelerated Life Test) is High Accelerated Life Test. HALT is a testing method that accelerates the exposure of product defects and weak points by applying progressively increasing environmental stress or working loads. Mainly used in the product development stage, it can quickly expose design and process defects of the product, providing us with a basis for design improvement and enhancing product reliability.
HALT was first proposed and continuously improved by Hobbs in the United States, with the main purpose of increasing its robustness and reliability by increasing the limit value of the tested object.
HALT applies stress in a stepped manner, which can quickly detect product defects, working limits, and failure limits. The stress applied to the product includes vibration, high and low temperatures, temperature cycling, power switch cycling, voltage margin and frequency margin testing, etc. This experiment can quickly identify defects in product design and manufacturing, improve design defects, increase product reliability, and shorten its launch cycle. At the same time, it can also improve design and accumulate basic data on product reliability, providing important basis for subsequent product development.
The main testing functions of HALT are as follows:
Utilize high environmental stress to stimulate product design defects and make improvements;
Understand the design capability and failure modes of the product;
As a reference for high stress screening and audit specification development;
Quickly identify defects in the product manufacturing process;
Increase product reliability and reduce maintenance costs;
Establish a product design capability database to provide a basis for research and development and shorten the design and manufacturing cycle.
The application of HALT in the product development stage can detect weak links in product reliability early on. The stress applied is much higher than the stress of the product during normal transportation, storage, and use.
HALT includes the following content:
1) Gradually apply stress until the product fails or malfunctions;
2) Take temporary measures to correct product failures or malfunctions;
3) Continue to gradually apply stress until the product fails or malfunctions again, and make corrections again;
4) Repeat the stress failure correction steps above; Identify the basic operational and destructive boundaries of the product.

What is a HASS test?
The full name of HASS (High Accelerated Stress Screen) is High Accelerated Stress Screening Test. HASS is a high accelerated stress screening process conducted during the production stage of a product after obtaining its working or failure limit values through HALT. Generally, 100% of the product is required to participate in the screening.
The purpose of HASS is to reduce potential defects in the product and to eliminate these defects as much as possible before the product leaves the factory. HASS mainly aims to find defective products in a short period of time and shorten the product improvement cycle by accelerating stress.
HASS is applied during the production phase of products to ensure that all improvement measures found in HALT have been implemented. HASS can also ensure that new defects are not introduced due to changes in production processes and components.
HASS includes the following content:
1) Conduct pre screening to eliminate hidden defects that may develop into obvious defects;
2) Conduct detection screening to identify obvious defects;
3) Fault analysis and improvement measures.

The difference between HASS and HALT:
1. The stages are different: HALT is the development stage, HASS is the early production stage, or the production stage.
2. Different purposes: HALT test is a bottom-up test aimed at identifying design shortcomings and improving them, while HASS is a pass through test aimed at mass production quality control.
3. Different intensities: HALT testing may cause damage to the product, while HASS testing should not cause damage to the product, as the product needs to be sold after the HASS test. After the HALT test, products are strictly prohibited from being shipped again.
4. Different test methods: HALT test accelerates stress until product failure; The HASS test is a process of repeating multiple times without product wear, gradually correcting, and completing the contour of the test.
5. HALT and HASS tests optimize failure rates at different stages of the device lifecycle.
