The surface temperature rise requirements for baking appliances such as ovens have always been a challenge in EU CE and GS certification. Recently, the European Technical Commission issued a new version of the standard EN IEC 60335-2-9:2023+A11:2023, which replaces the old version of the standard EN 60335-2-9:2003+A1:2004+A2:2006+A12:2007+A13:2010, ending the long-term situation of not updating or revising this standard.

Prior to this, although the old standard EN 60335-2-9:2003+A1:2004+A2:2006+A12:2007+A13:2010 allowed the use of double limit values, high-temperature labels, and exemption conditions for air vents, the OJ announcement and (EU) 2017/1357 directive deemed it to not comply with the safety objectives specified in point 1 (c) of Annex I to Directive 2014/35/EU and point 2 (b) of that annex. So for a long time, this type of product faces strict surface temperature rise testing requirements, which has brought great technical trouble to the factory.

The release of the new standard has relaxed the requirements of the old standard to a certain extent. The new standard DOP date is January 12, 2024, but when this new standard can be used for issuing CE-LVD certificates still needs to wait for the EU to cite this standard under the official journal LVD directive before it can be implemented.

Main changes in the new standard

Surface temperature rise:

If an electrical appliance has an accessible surface and its temperature rise limit is specified in Table 102, and the provisions of footnote b of Table 102 apply to that surface, or if Table 102+40K values are allowed in Article 11.102, the appliance should be marked with the symbol IEC 60417-5041 (2002-10), the rules of ISO 3864-1 apply to places other than the specified color, or marked with CAUTION: Hot surfaces

During the testing process of ovens, rotating grills, and cooking utensils, the temperature rise of the external front, top, and rear surfaces that can be contacted by EN 61032 test probe B shall not exceed the values specified in Table 102+40 K, except for non measuring surfaces. Unless measured on the surface, the temperature rise of other external surfaces shall not exceed the values specified in Table 102.
