Five step method for EMC rectification

Many electronic products encounter issues such as excessive radiation, electrostatic interference, and conducted interference during EMC testing. What really gives people a headache is often not the problem itself, but the lack of thinking during rectification, which ultimately leads to repeated trial and error. In fact, most EMC issues can be handled according to a relatively clear process.

1. Test the problem clearly first

Before rectification, first confirm which item did not pass, whether it was due to excessive radiation emission or insufficient anti-interference ability; Simultaneously record the frequency and amplitude of exceeding the standard, as well as the working status of the equipment at that time. Only by quantifying the phenomenon can there be direction for subsequent analysis.

2. Identify the source of interference

Next, we need to determine where the interference comes from. Narrowband problems are usually related to clocks and crystal oscillators, while broadband problems are more common in switching power supplies, motor drives, and other parts. By combining spectrum analysis and near-field probe scanning, the main interference points can usually be quickly identified.

3. Targeted rectification

It is recommended to follow the idea of "starting from the source, then following the path, and finally radiating" during rectification.

For example, adding decoupling or adjusting device parameters near the noise source; Filter conducted interference; Strengthen shielding, optimize wiring, shorten cables, and ensure proper grounding for radiation issues.

4. After modification, retest is required

Rectification is not just about adding components, but also about confirming the effect through local testing and formal retesting, while checking whether it affects functionality, heat dissipation, or signal quality to avoid solving one problem and bringing new problems.

5. Keep the experience

It is best to organize effective rectification methods into specifications, such as PCB layout requirements, filter selection principles, grounding and shielding rules, etc., and incorporate them into design standards, so that subsequent projects can avoid many detours.

The biggest fear of EMC rectification is blind stacking of materials, and the most effective way is to test first, locate later, and handle later. As long as we focus on the key points of noise sources, propagation paths, and structural design, most EMC problems can be solved faster.
