On February 23, 2024, the Department of Innovation, Science and Economic Development (ISED) of Canada released the second edition of ICES Gen, "General Requirements for Compliance with Interference Devices," which sets out general requirements applicable to devices that may cause interference. This ICES specifies general requirements applicable to interference devices, which will be used in conjunction with ICES standards applicable to their specific types. ICES Gen 2nd edition replaces ICES Gen 1st edition, which was released in July 2018 and revised in February 2021.

interim:

The second edition of ICES Gen will come into effect on February 23, 2025. During the transition period, compliance with ICES Gen version 1 or 2 is acceptable.

After the transition period, if the equipment is still manufactured, imported, distributed, leased, sold, or sold in Canada, it should comply with the new version of the applicable ICES standards.

Main changes:

Product label:

1. The device model that generates interference should be labeled according to section 6.3.3 of the standard. The label should be permanently affixed to the device or displayed electronically in accordance with Appendix B, and its text must be non erasable and clear to read.

2. When the conditions specified in section 6.3.1 are met, the label can appear in the form of a QR code.

3. If the device is too small or unable to attach the label to the device.

If the device size is greater than 2.5 centimeters, the label can be placed in the user manual and packaging after obtaining ISED certification and approval from the Engineering Bureau (CEB);

If the device size is ≤ 2.5 centimeters, there is no need to obtain prior approval from CEB, and the label can be placed directly in the user manual and packaging, rather than on the device itself.

4. The ISED compliance label should include the words "Canada" (or "CAN") and a universal reference to the equipment standard that causes interference, written in English and French. If at least one applicable ICES standard distinguishes between Class A and Class B equipment, the label should also include the category of the equipment. The example is as follows:

CAN ICES (*) / NMB (*)

Among them, * is either "A" or "B", but cannot be both at the same time, used to identify the applicable category of the device.

Note:

1) Products that have already been launched do not need to be re labeled, as the previous label already includes all necessary components required for the above requirements.

2) Here are some possible examples of labels that comply with the regulations in ICES Gen Phase 1 and also meet the above requirements. Therefore, when the transition period specified in section 3.1.2 expires, these labels do not need to be changed.

• CAN ICES-3(B)/NMB-3(B)

• Canada ICES-005 (A) / NMB-005 (A)

• CAN ICES-002 / NMB-002
