On November 16, 2023, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) officially released the Energy Star Downlights V1.0 specification to replace the embedded down lights and their modification kits in the soon to be shut down V2.2 specification.
The main content of the new standard is as follows:
1. Product scope
This specification is limited to retrofitting kits for tube lights and embedded tube lights directly connected to the power grid with a total input power of less than 150W.
1.1 Product categories
Tube lights with built-in or integrated LED modules, hole diameter ≤ 10 inches:
Fully or partially embedded in the ceiling;
Surface mounted to ceiling;
Installed on the wall and illuminated downwards;
Equipped with ropes, chains, pipes, etc., so that they can be fixed to the ceiling or wall
Embedded tube lamp modification kit with built-in or integrated LED modules, with a hole diameter of ≤ 10 inches;
Products with emergency and Wi Fi functions can apply for Energy Star certification.
1.2 Excluded products
Embedded tube lights without integrated light sources
Embedded downlight and embedded downlight modification kit with aperture greater than 10 inches
Track mounted spotlights
Single head and multi head single point installation spotlights
Embedded, semi embedded, surface mounted or suspended 1x4, 2x2 or 2x4 panel lights
Lighting fixtures used for general office lighting, such as strip chandeliers and panel lights
Dressing table lighting fixtures
Ceiling fan light kit
Ceiling lights that do not meet the definition of tube lights in Section 4
Semi ceiling lights that do not meet the definition of tube lights in Section 4
Chandelier
Wardrobe and cabinet lights
Embedded lighting fixtures that do not meet the definition of tube lights in Section 4
LED light bulb
Products with power consumption functions unrelated to lighting control in active mode or off state (such as lamps with voice assistance, speakers, UV disinfection, or cameras)
Line lights
Outdoor ceiling, pendant, pillar, and wall lights
Outdoor safety lighting fixtures
Mobile desktop and floor work lights
Table lamp
Ventilation fan with lighting
Torch lights and floor lamps
Wall lamp
Cover lights and work lights
LED ceiling light modification kit
LED wall lamp modification kit
Industrial and mining lamp
HID light or its SSL replacement light
Socket adapter or converter light
LED lights used to replace linear fluorescent lamps, compact pin fluorescent lamps, or HID lamps

3. Effective date
This specification will come into effect on November 16, 2023
