The joint investigation team of the State Administration for Market Regulation, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the National Health Commission, and the National Center for Disease Control and Prevention has released a report on the investigation of the issue of formamide in infant diapers: 168 domestic diaper production enterprises were investigated, 368 batches of finished products from 180 brands were sampled, and 32 batches of product components were tested, and formamide was not detected in the production of the enterprises.
The re examination website reported that 58 batches of samples from 15 brands retained by the blogger also did not detect formamide. The blogger's original testing method had defects, and the detection conclusion is not valid. 210 infant and toddler blood samples were retested according to the standard, but no formamide was detected.
The detection of formamide in infant diapers is a serious and professional inspection and testing activity, and the health hazards related to formamide require careful and objective research.
1、 What is formamide
Formamide (CAS No. 75-12-7) is commonly used as EVA foaming material solvent or foaming aid, and may remain in foam floor mats and some high molecular polymers.

2、 The hazards of formamide
The core risk of formamide lies in its reproductive and developmental toxicity. According to the EU chemical classification standards, formamide is classified as a Class 1B reproductive toxic substance. Long term accumulation in trace amounts in the human body can interfere with hormone metabolism and pose potential teratogenic risks to reproductive system development.
In China, formamide has been included in the Catalogue of Prohibited Raw Materials for Cosmetics. Long term exposure to formamide can be irritating to the skin and mucous membranes, and can easily cause skin allergies, ulcers, and other problems.
3、 Current requirements for formamide
EU REACH regulation: Formamide is listed as an SVHC (Substance of Very High Concern), with a content greater than 0.1% requiring notification; Some member states require EVA parenting products with formamide ≤ 200 mg/kg.
EN 71-9 (toy safety organic compound): Clarify the formamide test method and reference limit, applicable to foam toys, floor mats, etc.
Diapers/baby textiles: The current national standard GB/T 28004.1-2021 in China does not have a mandatory limit for formamide, but top brands generally implement restricted substance control and self declaration in accordance with REACH requirements.
4、 Brand and Manufacturer Compliance Action Process
Formamide has been listed as a reproductive toxic substance by the European Union and included in China's banned cosmetics list.
1. Establish a restricted substance list
Require suppliers of non-woven fabrics, cores, rubber bands, and packaging films to provide REACH and SVHC declarations or reports on formamide, ortho benzene, and other substances.
2. Conduct product conformity verification according to the target market
Export to the EU: REACH+EN 71 series (formamide+ortho benzene+heavy metals)
Export to the United States: CPSIA (ortho benzene/lead), buyers often add formamide declaration
Domestic high-end line: Conduct third-party verification and self declaration in accordance with REACH
3. Properly preserve testing records
When facing public opinion, e-commerce platform spot checks, or consumer doubts, a chemical report issued by an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratory with complete data is the quickest way for enterprises to self certify and rebuild trust.
