DOE certification
DOE certification is a mandatory energy efficiency certification implemented by the US Department of Energy, aimed at improving product energy efficiency, reducing energy consumption, and decreasing greenhouse gas emissions. It is one of the key compliance thresholds for electronic products, home appliances, and other products to enter the US market.
1、 The core points of DOE certification
Certification nature
DOE certification is a mandatory certification, and all products listed in the catalog must complete energy efficiency testing and register for filing, otherwise they cannot legally enter the US market. Amazon and other platforms have also begun mandatory verification.
Applicable product scope
Covering over 50 types of high energy consuming products in 6 major categories, mainly including:
Household appliances: refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners, microwaves, dishwashers, etc
Power supply category: external power adapters, chargers (such as mobile phone, tablet, Bluetooth device chargers), etc., must meet Level VI energy efficiency standards
Lighting products: LED bulbs, fluorescent lamps, ballasts, etc
Office equipment: computers, monitors, printers
Industrial equipment: motors, transformers UPS
Other bathroom products such as water heaters, battery charging systems, smart toilets, showerheads, etc
Core energy efficiency requirements
The average efficiency of external power adapters is ≥ 85% (according to 10 CFR 430.32)
LED bulb light efficiency ≥ 45 lumens/watt
The annual power consumption of the refrigerator needs to be controlled within the limit value according to the volume classification
Certification process
Preparation materials: product samples, technical documents (circuit diagrams, BOM tables, nameplates, etc.)
Laboratory testing: Conduct energy efficiency testing in a DOE accredited laboratory (cycle approximately 1-2 weeks)
Data submission: Upload the test report to DOE's compliance database (CBCS system)
Review and Registration: After passing the DOE review, the product will be included in the compliance list
Label addition: The product must be accompanied by an "ENERGY GUIDE" energy efficiency label, indicating annual power consumption, energy efficiency level, and other information
Certification cycle
Generally 6-8 weeks, depending on product complexity and testing progress. Some institutions provide expedited services, which can be completed within 3-4 weeks at the earliest.
2、 Suggestions for Enterprises to Go Global
Advance planning certification: It is recommended to refer to DOE energy efficiency standards during the product design phase to avoid delayed market launch due to later rectification.
Choose a professional organization: Priority should be given to third-party testing and certification agencies with CMA/CNAS qualifications to ensure authoritative and effective testing reports.
Pay attention to platform policy: Amazon US has mandated the provision of DOE certification documents for multiple types of products (such as lighting fixtures and bathrooms), and non compliant products will be taken down.
Continuous compliance maintenance: DOE certification is not permanent and requires regular data updates to address random inspections.
