Appendix J: Travel adaptors
A.2.1 The new definition of Travel adaptor adds the configuration of plugs and sockets to make the definition more clear
Portable accessories constructed as a whole or in multiple parts, including parts of plugs or sockets in accordance with Figure 2.1 of AS/NZS 3112, and parts of plugs or sockets other than those in accordance with Figure 2.1 of AS/NZS 3112.
A.3.1 Socket portion requirements
Parts of sockets that accept flat pin plugs in accordance with AS/NZS 3112 Figure 2.1 shall comply with the requirements of AS/NZS 3112, including all dimensional requirements.
Parts of socket-outlets with a set of holes may accept plugs other than AS/NZS 3112, Figure 2.1, other types of plugs shall—
(a) Complies with the requirements of AS/NZS 3112 except for dimensions;
(b) Comply with the dimensional requirements of the corresponding national standards.
Socket parts with a set of holes that accept plugs conforming to BS 1363 require the addition of protective doors to the socket parts.
As shown below:
The socket portion may incorporate multiple sets of apertures, however only two sets of apertures are accepted with connecting edges.
That is, for an aperture group containing connecting edges, only connecting edges are allowed between the two live apertures, the two neutral apertures, and the two ground apertures (if present), see Figure A.1, (a) meets the requirements, (b) does not meet the requirements.
The real thing is as follows:
The connection hole group shall comply with the requirements of AS/NZS 3112, and the dimensions shall comply with the corresponding national standard requirements of the socket part, except for the connection area.
The mobile adapter socket portion shall comply with the limitations of Section 4, items (e) and (f):
(e) contains a plug portion with only two prongs and a socket for connecting a non-2-pin plug or a 2-conductor cord;
(f) For each plug configuration that can be used with the adapter, contains a plug portion with a grounding prong and a socket without a grounding terminal or grounding contact.
Note: The aperture group of clause A.3.1 accepts a variety of plug types.
A.3.2.3 Additional tests to remove alternative test methods from AS/NZS 60884.1
A.4 Plug portion removes alternative test method for AS/NZS 60884.1
A.5 Protection against live parts, A.6 Prohibited features, A.7 Marking of socket portions
A.8 Additional requirements for lower rated outputs
The socket portion of the travel adapter shall include the following warning if it can be inserted into a plug with a current rating greater than that marked on the socket section. The location may be on the packaging.
WARNING - Devices with a current rating greater than that marked in the socket section cannot be used.
The travel adapter contains a hole set that accepts plugs rated below 220 V and should include the following warning. The location may be on the packaging.
WARNING - Devices with a plug designed for 120 V must cover the 220 V or higher voltage range before they can be used with this travel adapter.
