To protect consumer rights, India's Meity issued an executive order on February 3, 2026, which includes the rated capacity of portable rechargeable lithium batteries and battery packs under control. BIS subsequently released implementation guidelines on February 10, 2026.

key points

Scope of application: Rechargeable lithium batteries and battery packs certified according to IS 16046 (Part 2): 2018/IEC 62133-2:2017.

New requirement: Conduct a discharge performance (rated capacity) test at 20 ℃ in accordance with clause 7.3.1 of IS 16047 (Part 3): 2018/IEC 61960-3: 2017.

Mandatory implementation date: May 1, 2027.

Transition period requirement: Previously certified batteries must submit the IS 16047 (Part 3): 2018/IEC 61960-3: 2017 clause 7.3.1 test report to BIS before April 30, 2027.

Market spot check: This requirement should be included in the market spot check simultaneously.

For rechargeable lithium battery manufacturers and related practitioners involved in the Indian market, they must attach great importance to the increased capacity control requirements of the Indian BIS. Timely understand relevant regulations, complete testing and report submission according to requirements, and avoid losses due to negligence. At the same time, this is also an opportunity for enterprises to improve product quality and establish a good brand image. Only by truly providing consumers with products with real capacity and reliable performance can they establish a foothold in the Indian market and win the trust and support of consumers.
