ASTM is an acronym for the American Society for Materials and Testing, which is known in English as the American Society for Testing and Materials.ASTM was formerly the International Association for Testing Materials (IATM).IATM's first meeting, held in Europe in 1882, formed a working committee. In 1902, at the 5th annual meeting of the branch of the international association for the Testing of Materials, the American branch was declared officially independent and named as the American Society for Testing Materials.
ASTM Certification Introduction
ASTM is an acronym for the American Society for Materials and Testing, which is known in English as the American Society for Testing and Materials. ASTM was formerly the International Association for Testing Materials (IATM).In the 1880s, set up a technical committee system is advanced, the technical committee organized representative in terms of technical symposium, discuss to solve the dispute over the material specifications, test procedures, etc .IATM's first meeting, held in Europe in 1882, formed a working committee. At that time, it was mainly to solve the problem of test methods for steel and other materials. In 1902, at the 5th annual meeting of the branch of the international association for the Testing of Materials, the American branch was declared officially independent and named as the American Society for Testing Materials. With the expansion of the scope of its business and development ,the society's work center is not only a research and develop material specification and test method standard, also includes a variety of materials, products, systems, services, project characteristics and performance standards, and test method, procedure and other standards. In 1961 the organization changed its name to the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM).
ASTM is one of the oldest and largest nonprofit-making standard academic societies in the United States .After a century of development, ASTM now has 36,669 members (individuals and groups), of which 22,396 members of the main committee work as technical experts in its various committees. The technical committee of ASTM has a total of 2004 technical subcommittees. There are 105817 units participated in the ASTM standard formulation work, main task is to develop materials, products, systems, and services in the areas of features and performance standards, testing methods and standards, promote the development of relevant knowledge and promotion.
The standard system
ASTM standards established has always been adopted by a voluntary consensus. The technical committee is responsible for the standard system which is drafted by the standard working group. After a technical committee and technical committee vote, common to most members in the adoption of opinions, and by most of the members voted in favor of, only approved standard, published as a formal standard. In the process of a standard establishment, each member and any enthusiastic group interested in the preparation of has the right to their opinions, fully to put forward the opinion of the committee for research and treatment, to absorb all aspects of the correct opinions and Suggestions.
According to ASTM publication, there were 350 new standards in ASTM in 1997, a revised standard of 1,698, and 2681 standardized activities. From these Numbers you can see that activities are frequent and effective.ASTM standard is now divided into 15 categories (sections). Different kinds of volumes are included, and the standard Volume (Volume) is published, with a total of 73 volumes and more than 10000 standards, which are published in the form of ASTM standard yearbook. In 1999, the standard yearbook classification, all kinds of rolls and standards are as follows:
Class one: Steel products
Class two: Nonferrous metals
Class three: Metal material test method and the analysis procedure
Class four: Construction material
Class five: Petroleum products, lubricants and fossil fuels
Class 6 :paints, related coatings and aromatic compounds
Class 7: textiles and materials
Class 8: plastic
Type 9: rubber
Class 10 :electrical insulators and electronic products
Class 11: Water and environmental technology
Class 12: nuclear energy, solar energy
Class 13: Medical devices and services
Class 14: instruments and general test methods
Class 15: General industrial products, special chemicals and consumable materials
ASTM standard number form is:
Standard code + letter classification code + standard serial number + set the year + standard English name.
ASTM A 331-95 (1996) standard specification for cold alloy steel bars
1. After the standard serial number, the letter M is the standard of metric unit, without the M of letter M standard.
2. The age in which the brackets were re-examined in brackets after the setting of years.
3. A.B.C...Represents the revision of the edition.
4. The alphabetic code is:
A -- black metal
B - nonferrous metals (copper, aluminum, powder metallurgical materials, wires, etc.)
C - cement, ceramics, concrete and masonry materials
D -- other materials (petroleum products, fuels, low strength plastics, etc.)
E - miscellaneous (metal chemical analysis, fire resistance test, non-destructive test, statistical method, etc.)
F -- special purpose materials (electronic materials, shockproof materials, surgical materials, etc.)
G - corrosion, deterioration and degradation of materials
ASTM standard data type
Also included: Test Report (Test Report) and Test method usability
Type of ASTM standard
1.Test Method (Test Method) : to generate the Test result of material, product, system or service of one or more of the properties, characteristics or performance to identify, measure and evaluation of a certain process.
2.Standard Specification: an accurate description of a set of requirements for materials, products, systems, or services, as well as how to meet each of the required procedures.
3.Standard discipline (Practice) : the process of executing a specific operation or function that does not produce a test result.
4.Standard term (technical) : a document consisting of terms, terms, descriptions, symbols, abbreviations, etc.
5.Standard guide (Guidance) : a series of choices or explanations that do not recommend specific course of action.
6.Standard Classification: grouping materials, products, systems, or service systems in accordance with the same characteristics.
