In 1961 the organization changed its name to the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM).

ASTM is one of the oldest and largest nonprofit-making standard academic societies in the United States .After a century of development, ASTM now has 36,669 members (individuals and groups), of which 22,396 members of the main committee work as technical experts in its various committees. The technical committee of ASTM has a total of 2004 technical subcommittees. There are 105817 units participated in the ASTM standard formulation work, main task is to develop materials, products, systems, and services in the areas of features and performance standards, testing methods and standards, promote the development of relevant knowledge and promotion.

 

The standard system

 

ASTM standards established has always been adopted by a voluntary consensus. The technical committee is responsible for the standard system which is drafted by the standard working group. After a technical committee and technical committee vote, common to most members in the adoption of opinions, and by most of the members voted in favor of, only approved standard, published as a formal standard. In the process of a standard establishment, each member and any enthusiastic group interested in the preparation of has the right to their opinions, fully to put forward the opinion of the committee for research and treatment, to absorb all aspects of the correct opinions and Suggestions.

According to ASTM publication, there were 350 new standards in ASTM in 1997, a revised standard of 1,698, and 2681 standardized activities.From these Numbers you can see that activities are frequent and effective.ASTM standard is now divided into 15 categories (sections). Different kinds of volumes are included, and the standard Volume (Volume) is published, with a total of 73 volumes and more than 10000 standards, which are published in the form of ASTM standard yearbook.In 1999, the standard yearbook classification, all kinds of rolls and standards are as follows:

Numbering method

ASTM standard number form is:

Standard code + letter classification code + standard serial number + set the year + standard English name.

Example:

ASTM A 331-95 (1996) standard specification for cold alloy steel bars

Description:

1. After the standard serial number, the letter M is the standard of metric unit, without the M of letter M standard.

2. The age in which the brackets were re-examined in brackets after the setting of years.

3. A.B.C...Represents the revision of the edition.

A -- black metal

Type of ASTM standard

1.Test Method (Test Method) : to generate the Test result of material, product, system or service of one or more of the properties, characteristics or performance to identify, measure and evaluation of a certain process.
